In the second episode of What/If's first season entitled "What Now," things get even more complicated for lead characters Lisa and Sean after their company faces imminent peril. To save the firm, they consider taking a deal, but then they start doubting if it is the right decision. Meanwhile, Lisa finds herself trying to deal with the tension of her husband's affair with one of their friends.
In the first episode, we saw Lisa and Sean invest everything they had in a biotech firm. In an unexpected move, an influential player named Anne Montgomery approached them with an offer to invest a huge sum of $80 million in their project in exchange for Lisa spending one night with her husband. With Lisa faking a good night spent with Montgomery's spouse, Sean and she agreed to take it.
Now, the couple is forced to reconsider their options. They are advised by Foster, a private investigator, that the deal they took with Montgomery might be a trap instead of an opportunity. If they don't substantiate the deal, they risk losing everything they have invested. As they sit down to decide how to deal with their situation, the consequences of what they have done begin to dawn on them, and they ask themselves what they should do next.
Meanwhile, Lisa's understanding about her husband starts to unravel. He has been in a relationship with their friend for some time now. He is remorseful and wants another chance, but Lisa is far from being convinced. Fortunately, they find themselves at a couple counseling session, an opportunity she grabs to voice her frustrations. She hopes they can work through their relationship, but it's not that straightforward.
Back to the biotech company, the situation is getting worse. Other players have noticed the weakness of the company, and since Montgomery acquired a fair share, they might be considering a takeover. Faced between a rock and a hard place, they wonder whether to take another deal by Vargas, who wants to give them the same amount they had earlier received from Montgomery without any strings or to start a bidding war publicly and hope that it will drive the price up.
This episode has an extensive focus on Sean and Lisa. It allows the audience to understand them better while also showing how they react when things don't go as planned. Lisa tries to make the best of a difficult situation by pretending things are okay, but viewers can see through the cracks in her façade. Sean's character, on the other hand, is more straightforward, and he doesn't hide his disappointment from his partner.
In conclusion, "What Now," the second episode of What/If, is an excellent continuation of the intense first season. We get to see the tough spots that Sean and Lisa find themselves in after making a deal with the devil. It's evident that the characters' problems have only started, and it's going to take more than an extraordinary plan to overcome what's coming. Fortunately, this show serves a thrilling ride that keeps viewers engaged from start to finish.
