The episode "Coup De Grace" in season 5 of Wentworth takes the intense drama of the series to a whole new level. In this episode, the power dynamics within the prison are pushed to their limits as some of the inmates plot against each other while others try to maintain order.

The episode starts off with Governor Joan Ferguson (Pamela Rabe) talking to Will Jackson (Robbie Magasiva) about the latest developments at the prison. She’s worried about the growing unrest among the inmates and wants to find a way to quell it before it turns into a full-blown riot. Meanwhile, Kaz (Tammy MacIntosh) and her followers are still reeling from the brutal attack on their ally by Marie (Susie Porter) and her group of toughs.

As the plot unfolds, Joan works to keep control of the prison, even as Marie makes a bid for more power. Jackson, meanwhile, must decide whether to make a deal with the devil (in this case, Joan) or try to maintain some level of independence. And throughout it all, Kaz and her followers must decide how far they’re willing to go to protect themselves and their interests.

One of the most striking aspects of "Coup De Grace" is the way it explores the deeply flawed characters within the show. Joan, Kaz, and Marie are all extremely complex characters, each with their own motivations and desires. As the episode unfolds, we see each of them make decisions that are both morally ambiguous and deeply consequential.

The tension within the prison is palpable throughout the episode, as everyone jockeys for power and control. But at the same time, there are moments of unexpected tenderness and even joy. For example, we see Allie (Kate Jenkinson) and Bea (Danielle Cormack) share a sweet moment together, despite the fact that they’re both struggling with their own demons.

As always, the acting in Wentworth is first-rate. The performances of the show’s core cast are all excellent, but special mention must be made of Rabe’s portrayal of Joan. Her character is one of the most fascinating in recent TV memory, and Rabe fully inhabits her, bringing a level of nuance and depth to the role that is truly impressive.

The episode's pacing is another standout element. "Coup De Grace" is scripted in a way that keeps the viewer on the edge of their seat from start to finish. There are moments of tension and suspense that are almost unbearable, as well as moments of shocking violence and surprising tenderness. Despite the fact that the episode takes place almost entirely within the confines of the prison, it never feels claustrophobic or boring.

Overall, "Coup De Grace" is an excellent addition to the Wentworth canon. It’s a tense, dramatic, and deeply engaging episode that will leave viewers on the edge of their seat. Whether you’re a longtime fan of the show or a newcomer to the world of Wentworth, this episode is definitely worth checking out.
