After the shocking events of the season three finale, which saw Bea Smith (Danielle Cormack) being buried alive and Joan "The Freak" Ferguson (Pamela Rabe) getting away with her crimes, season four of Wentworth picks up right where we left off.
In the episode titled "First Blood," the inmates of H Block are struggling to come to terms with Bea's death and the loss of their leader. Kaz (Tammy MacIntosh) steps up to try and fill the void by leading the women in a protest against the new prison governor, Jake Stewart (Bernard Curry).
Meanwhile, Vera (Kate Atkinson) is tasked with investigating the death of a young inmate, Stella Radic (Bessie Holland), who was killed in an apparent drug overdose. Her investigation leads her to suspect that someone in the prison is responsible for bringing in the drugs, but she has trouble convincing Jake to take action.
As tensions rise in the prison, Allie (Kate Jenkinson) finds herself caught in the middle of a power struggle between Kaz and The Freak, both of whom want her on their side. Will Allie be able to make the right decision and protect herself in the process?
The episode also explores the complicated relationship between Franky (Nicole da Silva) and Bridget (Libby Tanner), as Franky struggles with her new role as a mentor to one of the other inmates. Will their relationship survive the stresses of life in prison?
Overall, "First Blood" sets the stage for what promises to be a dramatic and emotionally charged season of Wentworth, as the women of H Block struggle to survive in a world where violence and betrayal are the norm.
