The Girl Who Waited is the third episode of Wentworth's first season. In this episode, the character of Jacs Holt begins to become a central figure in the show. She is a powerful woman who runs the drug trade inside Wentworth.
The episode begins with a flashback that shows Bea Smith, the main character, and her husband in happier times before her imprisonment. This flashback is intercut with a scene where Bea is now in prison, and she is attacked by Jacs' henchwoman, who is upset with Bea for taking her position in the laundry. Bea is able to overpower her attacker and sends a message to Jacs that she won't be pushed around.
Elsewhere in the prison, Liz Birdsworth is struggling with her heroin addiction, which is worsening as she is denied access to her methadone. Her friendship with fellow inmate Doreen is tested when Doreen turns her back on Liz and tells the prison officer about Liz's stash of drugs. Liz is sent to solitary confinement, where she experiences intense withdrawal symptoms.
Meanwhile, officer Will Jackson is adjusting to his new job at Wentworth. He is confronted by Meg Jackson, the senior officer, for not reporting the attack on Bea. Although he tries to explain the situation, Meg remains suspicious of Will and warns him to watch his back.
The episode also introduces the character of Franky Doyle, another powerful inmate who has a history with Jacs. Franky is a complex character, both feared and respected by the other inmates. She takes Bea under her wing and helps her to navigate the dangerous world of Wentworth.
As tensions rise in the prison, the episode ends with a shocking twist that sets the stage for the rest of the season. Overall, The Girl Who Waited is a tense and dramatic episode that sets the stage for the complex relationships and power dynamics that will continue throughout the series.
