A young woman named Rebecca Sedwick takes a ride with a co-worker, whom she thinks is giving her a ride to an interview for what could be the job of a lifetime. Later that day, Rebecca disappears. Her mother, Tricia, begins frantically searching for her daughter, who she finds out has been dating a boy named Aaron. Tricia reaches out to Aaron who tells her Rebecca has run away to live with her father. However, after speaking to Rebecca's father, Tricia knows this is not true.
As Tricia and the police investigate, they find out that Rebecca had been cyberbullied by several of her classmates. In an attempt to get Rebecca to kill herself, the bullies had told her to hang herself from a water tower. Tricia is horrified by the cruelty of the bullies and begins to work with police to identify them.
When they finally catch the bullies, they discover that their ringleader is a girl named Guadalupe Shaw, who is only 12 years old. Guadalupe shows no remorse for what she did and even brags about it on social media. The police are left with the question of what to do with such a young and seemingly unrepentant criminal.
In addition to the cyberbullying angle, the episode also explores the idea of parental responsibility. Rebecca's mother struggles with the guilt of not realizing the extent of her daughter's pain and not being able to protect her. Meanwhile, Guadalupe's mother is interviewed and reveals that she had no idea what her daughter was doing on social media and had not been monitoring her online behavior.
Overall, "Job of a Lifetime" is a poignant and thought-provoking episode that highlights the very real danger of cyberbullying and the importance of parental involvement in children's online lives.
