We the People is an animated series created by Chris Nee, the Emmy-winning creator of Doc McStuffins, and produced by Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground Productions for Netflix. The show consists of 10 short episodes, each one featuring a different song and style of animation that focuses on civic education and encouraging kids to participate in democracy.

The series features a wide range of musical genres, including rap, Latin pop, and country. It highlights the stories of ordinary Americans who are making a difference in their communities, and uses catchy tunes and vivid visuals to explain key concepts like checks and balances, the importance of voting, and the role of the judiciary.

Each episode is only a few minutes long, making it easy for young viewers to digest and enjoy in bite-sized portions. However, despite their brevity, the episodes pack in a lot of information and offer a refreshingly nuanced take on American democracy.

One of the standout episodes is “We the People Are the Constitution,” which explains the origins and significance of the Constitution in a way that young viewers can understand. Another notable episode is “We the People Need to Vote,” which teaches kids about the history of voting rights in America and the importance of using their voices to effect change.

All of the episodes are infused with a sense of optimism and a belief in the power of ordinary citizens to effect change in their communities. They are also refreshingly non-partisan, focusing on the mechanics of democracy rather than any particular political ideology.

The animation in We the People is top-notch, with each episode featuring a different visual style that suits the tone and content of the song. For example, “We the People Are Here” features a bright, colorful style with nods to hip-hop and street art, while “We the People Are Equal” is rendered in a beautiful, watercolor-inspired style that emphasizes the beauty of diversity.

The voice cast is equally impressive, with each episode featuring a different celebrity singer or actor who lends their talents to the song. Janelle Monáe leads “We Are the Ones,” which encourages young people to get involved in their communities, while H.E.R. provides the vocals for “Change,” which celebrates the role of activism in American history.

Overall, We the People is a delightful and engaging series that is a must-watch for any family with young children. It does an excellent job of introducing complex civic concepts in a fun and accessible way, and its celebration of civic engagement is sure to inspire the next generation of American leaders.

We the People is a series that ran for 1 seasons (10 episodes) between July 4, 2021 and on Netflix
