Set in London, Waking the Dead is a British police procedural television series that deals with solving complex and challenging crimes. This show follows a team of investigators, including detectives, forensic scientists, and psychologists, who work together to uncover the truth behind unsolved murders that have remained a mystery for years. In season 2, episode 3, the team tackles one of their most challenging cases yet, in an episode named Deathwatch: Part 1.
The episode opens with the discovery of a young girl's body, which was found hidden in a disused hospital. The girl's body was mummified, and it is evident that she had been deceased for at least six years. Due to the state of decay, the team has trouble piecing together how she came to be there, and the identity of the victim is also unknown. The team is led by Superintendent Stella Goodman (Félicité Du Jeu), who heads the Missing Persons Unit, and is joined by DCI Peter Boyd (Trevor Eve), and his team of detectives, Detective Sergeant Mel Silver (Claire Goose), Detective Inspector Spencer Jordan, (Wil Johnson), and Forensic Scientist Eva Sharpe (Esther Hall).
As the investigation goes on, they discover that the girl's burial had been planned and executed with great care, and it seems clear that someone went to great lengths to keep her hidden. The team finds a lead that points them towards a man called Trevor Hands (David Warner), a former employee of the hospital who was fired at the time of the girl's disappearance. The team believes that Hands may have had something to do with the girl's disappearance and murder, making him the prime suspect in the case.
The team's investigation leads them to a group of men who had been involved in an illegal dog-fighting ring, which was active at the time of the girl's disappearance. The connection between the illegal activity and the girl's murder puts the team on high alert, and they work to uncover any information that will help them solve the case. Boyd and Silver visit the widow of one of the men believed to be involved in the activity, and they gain a critical piece of evidence that leads them to believe that the girl's murder was more complicated than they had initially thought.
As the investigation progresses, the team finds that the case runs deep, and there is more to it than what meets the eye. With the help of Sharpe's forensic science, the team makes a breakthrough that leads them to a potential witness who might have the necessary information to solve the case. In addition to this, they discover that several people who had been involved in the illegal dog-fighting ring had met untimely deaths in the past years, putting them on alert about a possible serial killer.
The episode concludes with the team slowly piecing together how the girl had been murdered, and how her death had been related to the illegal activity. The case remains open, and the team is left with several unanswered questions that need to be addressed in Part 2. Deathwatch: Part 1 is a thrilling, suspenseful episode that is sure to keep viewers on the edge of their seats as the team races against time to solve this case.
