The second episode of Voltron: Legendary Defender follows the Paladins of Voltron after they've established their roles within the team dynamics. After their successful formation of Voltron in the previous episode, the team realizes the full extent of their responsibilities and quickly learn that relying on technology may not always be the best solution.
The episode begins as the Paladins, consisting of Lance, Pidge, Hunk, Keith, and Shiro, receive a distress signal from a nearby planet. They soon discover that the planet is being invaded by robotic drones hell-bent on destroying everything on the planet in the name of the Galra Empire. The team immediately springs into action, but they quickly realize that their newly-formed confidence doesn't quite match their combat skills. They struggle to keep up with the drones and are forced to retreat, leaving the planet to its fate.
Upon returning to the Castle of Lions, the team meets Princess Allura and her advisor, Coran. The Princess provides them with more information about the Galra Empire and their obsession with harnessing the power of Voltron. Through this interaction, the team gains a better understanding of the urgent need to work as a cohesive unit and to put their full trust in each other.
The team is left in a state of disarray as they are unable to effectively function as a team of pilots. Shiro steps in as the leader, but his methods differ from what the rest of the team is used to. After a few bickering exchanges, the team agrees to trust Shiro and his willingness to push them to their limits.
This is where the name of the episode, Some Assembly Required, becomes apparent. As a team-building exercise, Shiro takes them on a mission to retrieve an upgraded engine that will enhance their flying abilities. However, this plan takes an unexpected and dangerous turn when they discover that they must first retrieve the engine from a seemingly abandoned oil rig in the middle of the ocean.
The Paladins reluctantly agree to the mission, and after an intense battle with sea monsters, they reach the oil rig, only to be met with even more obstacles. They must work together to overcome the Galra force defending the engine, but their newfound trust and teamwork are put to the ultimate test.
The episode ends with the Paladins returning to the Castle with the upgraded engine, and a newfound confidence in their abilities as a team. They have learned to rely on each other and their unique abilities rather than relying on technology alone. The episode ultimately serves as a lesson in the importance of trust, communication, and collaboration in any team dynamic.
Overall, Some Assembly Required is an action-packed episode that highlights the growth of the Paladins as they continue to develop into a highly effective team. It is a pivotal episode that sets the tone for the rest of the series and showcases the show's emphasis on the power of teamwork.
