In the first episode of Voltron: Legendary Defender season 1, titled "The Rise of Voltron," the audience is introduced to a group of five teenagers, each from different corners of the universe. These teens are chosen to become the next generation of Paladins, pilots of robotic lions that combine into the legendary defender known as Voltron.
The episode starts with the Paladins-to-be traveling towards their destination, the Castle of Lions, led by a little alien creature named Coran. Along the way, they are ambushed by a group of Galra soldiers, under the command of the evil Emperor Zarkon. After a thrilling fight sequence, the group reaches the Castle of Lions, where they are mentored by Coran and the princess of the planet Altea, Allura.
Allura explains to the teenagers that they are standing on the last bastion of the resistance against the Galra Empire. Her father, King Alfor, built the Castle of Lions as a place of refuge for those who oppose the Galra. However, with the loss of the fifth lion, hope and morale among the resistance is fading. Allura reveals that, according to an ancient legend, Voltron could be the key to defeating Zarkon and his ruthless Galra Empire. She explains that the lions are sentient beings, and can only be piloted by those who have a strong bond with them. The group must form a deep connection with their lions, in order to stand a chance against the Galra.
The team also learns that the castle's central computer system, "The Black Lion," has chosen a leader among them. However, the chosen leader, Shiro, has a complicated past. He had been taken captive by the Galra and held for a year, and cannot remember everything that happened to him during that time. Despite his trauma, Shiro is determined to lead the team to victory.
As the group faces many challenges during their training, they begin to form connections with their lions. The lions also exhibit individual personalities, with unique quirks and strengths. The Blue Lion, piloted by Lance, is shown to be the most agile and graceful of the five, while the Red Lion, piloted by hotheaded Keith, is the most aggressive. The Green Lion, piloted by Pidge, is highly intelligent and is shown to be the team's tech expert, while Yellow Lion, piloted by the happy-go-lucky Hunk, is the strongest and sturdiest of the five.
In the climax of the episode, the Galra Empire launches a full-scale attack on the Castle of Lions, hoping to destroy the last hope of the rebellion. The Paladins manage to hold off the attack, but they soon discover that the Galra have found the missing fifth lion. Shiro leads the charge to retrieve the lion, and the team successfully finds and brings it back to the castle. With all five lions now under their control, the team finally activates the legendary defender known as Voltron.
The episode ends with a breathtaking scene, as the Paladins pilot their lions to form Voltron for the first time. The defender emerges as a towering, mighty robot, with a unique weapon in each hand. The team is left in awe, realizing that they are now humanity's last line of defense against the invading Galra Empire.
