As the episode opens, we see that things have taken a turn for the worse for the once-mighty Ragnar Lothbrok, who is now struggling with his health and facing a new array of threats from those who wish to take his place. He seeks the help of the Seer to guide him through his troubles, but the Seer has a grim message for Ragnar - that his fate is sealed, and that he will soon be facing his own demise.
Meanwhile, in Paris, we see that the French King has made his move against the Vikings, launching a surprise attack on their camp in an attempt to wipe out the invading forces. Despite his best efforts, King Ecbert is unable to save the Vikings from the massacre, and many of his own people are killed in the conflict.
As election season approaches, the different candidates for leadership of the Viking world begin to make their moves, each vying for support from the various factions that make up their society. Ragnar's main rival, Harald Finehair, is out for blood and is determined to remove him from power, while his own brother Rollo struggles to find his place in the world and to determine where his loyalties truly lie.
