Escape to Europe/Cycle of Terror is the second episode of the fourth season of Vice. This episode takes a closer look at two very different but equally headline-grabbing topics: the refugee crisis in Europe, and the war against terror in Afghanistan.
The first segment, Escape to Europe, takes viewers on a journey with two Syrian refugees as they attempt to make their way from Turkey to Germany. Along the way, we see the various obstacles they face, including dangerous boat rides, overcrowded camps, and the constant threat of being caught by authorities. Through their stories, we gain insight into what it's like to be a refugee in Europe, and the lengths people will go to escape the violence and turmoil in their home countries.
The second segment, Cycle of Terror, focuses on the ongoing war against terror in Afghanistan. We hear from Afghan security forces who are on the frontline of the fight against the Taliban and other extremist groups, as well as from US soldiers who are embedded with them. We also hear from Afghan civilians who have been caught in the crossfire and have lost loved ones in the violence.
Throughout both segments, Vice reporters interview experts in their respective fields to gain a deeper understanding of these complex and often misunderstood issues. In the first segment, we hear from immigration lawyers and aid workers who are trying to help refugees navigate Europe's complicated asylum system. In the second segment, we hear from military analysts who offer insight into the challenges of fighting a war against an elusive and resilient enemy.
The episode offers no easy solutions but gives a humanizing view of the issue. The showmakers refrained from being judgmental, and, through solid reporting, let the viewers think for themselves. The documentary is an honest and engaging look at two of the most pressing issues facing the world today.
