In Versailles season 2 episode 9, titled "Seven Shadows", tensions continue to rise as Louis XIV's paranoia leads him to take drastic measures to protect his reign. The episode opens with Madame de Montespan on the run, seeking refuge in a convent after being discovered in a compromising position with a lover. Louis, meanwhile, is preoccupied with a mysterious threat, convinced that there are seven shadowy figures plotting against him and his kingdom.
As Louis becomes increasingly paranoid, he enlists the help of the Marquis de Fabien to investigate the supposed plot against him. Together, they question a series of suspects, including the newly returned Duke of Cassel and the ambassador of Venice. But despite their efforts, Louis remains convinced that the threat is still out there.
Meanwhile, tensions continue to simmer between Philippe and Chevalier, as Philippe becomes increasingly disillusioned with his role in Louis' court. He seeks solace in the arms of his secret lover, Palatine, but their time together is cut short when they are discovered and Palatine is forced to flee Versailles.
As the episode progresses, the tension and paranoia come to a head. Louis becomes increasingly desperate to uncover the truth about the seven shadows, even going so far as to have suspected conspirators tortured. But despite his efforts, the threat remains elusive.
Ultimately, the episode ends on a cliffhanger, with the fate of several characters hanging in the balance. As Louis' paranoia reaches fever pitch, it seems that no one is safe from his wrath. Will the truth about the seven shadows be uncovered? Or will Louis' paranoia destroy everything he has worked so hard to build? Only time will tell.
