Of Blood and Stone is the finale episode of the second season of the television series Versailles. The show returned for its season two with new plots revolving around the personal and political lives of Louis XIV (George Blagden) and his courtiers in 17th century France.
The episode begins with Louis experiencing intense emotional pain due to the death of his close friend Philippe (Alexander Vlahos). As a result, he decides to attend the autopsy of his brother to see for himself the cause of his death. Meanwhile, back at court, Fabien (Tygh Runyan) becomes increasingly suspicious of Marchal's (Sébastien Dupuis) intentions towards Madame de Montespan (Anna Brewster), which leads to a shocking confrontation.
Over in Holland, William of Orange (George Webster) gathers his troops and prepares to invade France. Back in Versailles, the queen's duties become increasingly challenging as her husband, Louis, struggles to deal with his own grief and responsibilities. However, as everyone begins to come to terms with the loss of Philippe and the mounting threats from other countries, they find that these problems have only strengthened their resolve and determination.
The episode builds up tension as the court prepares to face William of Orange's attack. Louis tries to make a daring move that could potentially change the course of the war, but his decision is met with opposition. Philippe's death has left a power vacuum at Versailles, and it becomes clear that power plays will continue after this season as Louis’ courtiers take action to secure their status. The queen manages to find solace in the presence of her daughter, and Louis finally shows signs of progress towards reconciliation and acceptance.
The finale of the second season of Versailles marks a turning point in the series as the season brings out more complex characters and heightened political intrigue. Of Blood and Stone is an emotionally charged episode, a grand finish to what has been a thrilling, historically infused series. Fans can look forward to future seasons as the showrunners continue to explore the people and events that shaped French history.
