Valvrave the Liberator is a mecha anime series that was directed by Kou Matsuo and written by Ichirou Ookouchi, who also serves as the series composer. The show is produced by Aniplex and debuted in 2013. The voice cast includes Ryouhei Kimura as Haruto Tokishima, Asami Seto as Saki Rukino, Haruka Tomatsu as L-Elf Karlstein, Yuuki Ono as Akira Renbokoji, Ai Kayano as Aina Sakurai, Misato Fukuen as Marie Nobi, Hiroyuki Yoshino as Kyuma Inuzuka, Yuichi Nakamura as Raizo Yamada, Daisuke Namikawa as Cain Dressel, Minako Kotobuki as Takahi Ninomiya, and Wataru Hatano as Satomi Renbokoji.
The show takes place in a future timeline where 70 percent of humanity lives in space colonies due to overpopulation on Earth. Two superpowers, the Atlantic Rim United States (ARUS) and the Dorssia Military Pact Federation, are at war with each other. The student-run JIOR (Japan and Islands of the Oceanian Republic) colony has declared neutrality in the conflict, but no one believes they will be able to maintain it.
The story follows the protagonist Haruto Tokishima, a student in JIOR who lives a peaceful life until his school is infiltrated by Dorssian soldiers. He finds himself in possession of a mysterious mecha known as a Valvrave, which he uses to fight back against the enemy. The Valvrave not only gives him incredible power but also has a unique ability to grant immortality to its pilot.
Alongside Haruto are his classmates Saki Rukino and L-Elf Karlstein, who is a Dorssian spy but allies with JIOR. As the story progresses, they are forced into greater battles as the war between the ARUS and Dorssia escalates. They encounter various obstacles, including betrayals from within and the revelation of the origins of the Valvraves. Together, they fight to protect their colony and bring an end to the war.
One of the show's best qualities is its character development. Each member of the main cast has a unique backstory and personality that helps drive the plot forward. Haruto is a compassionate individual who is willing to risk everything to protect his friends and colony. Saki is a calculative and headstrong character who evolves throughout the series. L-Elf is a driven and cold character whose backstory is slowly revealed throughout the show. Their interactions and relationships slowly build over time, allowing the audience to become invested in their journeys.
The plot of Valvrave the Liberator is fast-paced and action-packed, with a mix of space battles, political intrigue, and personal drama. Some of the plot twists may seem predictable, but others are genuinely surprising and add to the overall enjoyment of the show. The animation is top-notch, and the design of the mecha is unique and visually appealing.
The soundtrack is also one of Valvrave's strengths. Composed by Akira Senju, the music ranges from epic and orchestral to somber and reflective. The opening and closing themes are catchy and fit well with the show's tone.
Overall, Valvrave the Liberator is a satisfying mecha anime that delivers on both Action and story. With its strong character development and engaging plot, it's a must-watch for fans of the genre. The show manages to balance its darker moments with hope and humor, making it a memorable experience that stays with you even after the credits roll.
