Rich explores how visionaries tried to turn More's imaginary world into real places on Earth. First it was the turn of religious zealots and the new 'Jerusalem', then the socialists, followed by the totalitarian communists and capitalists. Rich ends with the arch-utopian Steve Jobs, the Silicon Valley control freak who tried to reshape human behavior through minimalist design and technology.

Rich looks at the utopias of our imagination. He starts with More's meme of Utopia, finding out how this powerful idea took root in contemporary culture, and how explorers began to search for real utopias overseas, fabled new worlds paved with gold and looser sexual morals. Reluctantly realizing there were no real utopias out there to find, humanity retreated into their imaginations.
