Upotte! is a Japanese anime series produced by Xebec and directed by Takao Kato. The series premiered on April 6, 2012 and aired for 10 episodes. The series is adapted from a manga of the same name written by Kitsune Tennouji. This is a comedy series that mainly focuses on the absurdity of anthropomorphized weapons.
The plot follows a group of anthropomorphic guns and their human handlers, who are all students at Seishou Academy. Seishou Academy is divided into two primary sections, the normal section and the E-rank section, which is only for student soldiers. The main characters of Upotte! are a group of four girls who are all based on real-life guns. These girls are named FNC, Sig SAUER P226, L85A1, and M16A4.
FNC, the main character of the series, is portrayed as a cheerful, energetic girl who is also very skilled with her weapon. She is portrayed as an FN FNC assault rifle, a weapon that was designed in Belgium in the 1970s. Sig SAUER P226, on the other hand, is portrayed as a cool, calm, and collected girl who is also very good with her weapon. She is portrayed as a Sig Sauer P226 pistol, a popular handgun used by police and military forces worldwide. L85A1, while also a skilled shooter, is portrayed as being more laid back and carefree. She is portrayed as a British bullpup assault rifle that was used primarily by the British military. Finally, M16A4 is portrayed as a serious, no-nonsense girl who is also the most skilled shooter of the group. M16A4 is portrayed as a standard issue rifle for the United States Marine Corps.
Together, these four girls attend Seishou Academy and learn how to become better fighters, all the while dealing with typical teenage insecurities and drama. Throughout the series, the girls encounter different challenges as they attend classes and work to improve their shooting abilities. They also face off against other students in shooting competitions, fending off rivalries and romantic advances in the process.
Despite the show's main focus being on anthropomorphic weapons, the characters are still relatable and likable, despite the absurdity of them being guns that can walk and talk. Through their various personalities and quirks, the audience is able to get invested in their growth and interactions with each other.
The animation in Upotte! is of a high quality and the character designs are unique and detailed, with each of the girls having their own distinct features and personalities. The show's soundtrack is also well-crafted and adds a layer of enjoyment to the viewing experience. The musical score complements the situations that play out in the series, adding tension, excitement and helping to keep the viewer engaged.
One of the highlight moments of Upotte! is when the show delves into the actual function of the guns. There are moments where the series addresses the specific way each weapon operates, packing in some interesting tidbits of knowledge about their mechanics.
Overall, Upotte! is a fun and lighthearted anime that caters to firearm enthusiasts as well as casual anime watchers. The show's imaginative concept of anthropomorphic firearms is unique and intriguing, and the series takes advantage of this concept to portray the various quirks and traits of the different weapons. While the show is a comedy at its core, there are also some moments of drama and action which give some impact to the story. The upbeat nature of the series makes it an easy-to-watch, entertaining show that is sure to keep the audience entertained throughout its 10-episode run.
