The Big Apple is the 12th episode of the ninth season of the popular food show Unwrapped. Hosted by Marc Summers, this episode takes us on a journey through some of the most iconic foods and beverages associated with New York City.
The episode starts off with a visit to the famous hot dog stand Nathan's, where we learn about the history of the Coney Island hotspot and how their all-beef hot dogs became a staple of New York culture. From there, we move on to another New York classic - pizza! We explore the history of Lombardi's, the first pizzeria in America, and see how they make their famous coal-fired pies.
Next up, we take a trip to Junior's, the famous Brooklyn cheesecake institution. Marc gets a behind-the-scenes look at how they make their classic dessert, and he even gets to try a slice! Then we move on to a newer addition to the New York food scene - the cronut. We visit the original creator of the cronut, Dominique Ansel, and see how he makes his famous pastry.
Of course, no visit to New York would be complete without a bagel, and that's exactly where we go next. Marc visits Ess-a-Bagel to see how their hand-rolled bagels are made, and he also gets to try some of their famous spreads. Then it's time for something sweet, so we head over to Serendipity 3 to see their famous frozen hot chocolate being made.
But New York isn't just about food - it's also famous for its drinks! The next stop on our journey is the Brooklyn Brewery. Marc takes a tour of the brewery and learns how they make their famous beer. Then we head over to the Clover Club to see how they make their classic Brooklyn cocktail.
Finally, we end our tour of the Big Apple with a sweet treat from the Meatball Shop. Marc visits their Lower East Side location to try their famous ice cream sandwiches, made with homemade cookies and ice cream.
Throughout the episode, Marc interviews chefs and food experts to learn more about the history and culture behind each of these iconic New York foods. We also get to see how each item is made and what sets it apart from other versions of the same dish.
Overall, The Big Apple is a fun and informative episode of Unwrapped that celebrates the food and drink culture of one of America's most iconic cities.
