Untold Stories of the E.R. is a documentary-style television series that chronicles the dramatic and sometimes shocking real-life medical cases that come through the doors of emergency rooms across America. Each episode features a different set of cases and the dedicated medical professionals who work tirelessly to save lives and treat their patients.
In Season 4 Episode 7, entitled "Liver Die," viewers are taken on a journey through three separate medical emergencies that all involve the liver. The episode begins with a young woman who has been partying and drinking heavily for several days. She comes to the emergency room complaining of severe abdominal pain, vomiting, and jaundice. The doctors suspect that she may be suffering from acute liver failure, which can be life-threatening.
As they rush to stabilize her, the medical team tries to determine what exactly has caused her liver to fail. Was it the alcohol, drugs, or something else entirely? And even if they can identify the cause, can they do anything to save her life?
Next, the episode takes us to another patient, a man who has developed dangerous complications from a liver transplant he received several years earlier. His weakened immune system has left him vulnerable to infections, and now he has developed an abscess on his liver that is causing him excruciating pain. The doctors must figure out how to drain the abscess and treat the infection without further damaging his already fragile liver.
Finally, the episode concludes with an elderly woman who has been admitted to the hospital with a mysterious illness. She is jaundiced and suffering from severe fatigue, but her symptoms do not match up with any of the typical causes of liver disease. The medical team must race against the clock to put the pieces of her medical puzzle together before it's too late.
Throughout the episode, viewers get an inside look at the intense, high-pressure environment of the emergency room, as well as the incredible skill and dedication of the doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals who work there. Each case presents its own unique challenge, and the medical team must use all of their expertise and resources to provide the best possible care for their patients.
