Traveling to the emergency room can be one of the most complicated and overwhelming healthcare experiences for individuals. The combination of physical pain and emotional exhaustion can sometimes lead to dangerous situations. Untold Stories of the E.R. is an American reality television series that gives a behind-the-scenes look into the chaotic world of emergency medicine. Each episode showcases the work of doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals as they save lives in high-stress, unpredictable situations. In season 11, episode 6, titled "Face Off," the show continues to give viewers an inside look at the heroic work done in emergency rooms across the United States.
The episode opens with a man in his mid-thirties arriving at the hospital with severe facial injuries caused by an altercation with a cow. With an exposed eye socket, a misaligned nose, and an inability to speak coherently, the man requires immediate surgery. The team of emergency physicians assesses the extent of the damage and determines the hospital's next steps. The facial bones are scrambled, making reconstructive surgery a necessary procedure, but the patient must first get an MRI before they can perform the surgery. In the meantime, the emergency team is doing all they can to reduce pain, lower swelling, and prevent possible infections. The audience sees the doctors and nurses working in tandem with the patient to deal with an immensely painful and traumatic experience, ultimately resulting in the best possible outcome.
In another case, a man with a gunshot wound enters the hospital. The shot was fired a few inches away from his face, leaving him with what appears to be a simple graze, but it soon becomes clear that the bullet is still lodged in his skull. The bullet had entered his head from the top left and lodged just next to his right ear canal. Upon discovering this, the physicians quickly transported the man to the operating room for a risky surgery. The procedure is done to remove the bullet, and the patient's cranial bone was pieced together. Despite the minor initial harm, the bullet creates a life-threatening situation as it creates a blood clot, which can lead to a stroke. The team works tirelessly to remove the bullet and prevent any substantial harm that could have led to permanent injury or even death.
In a third case, a young man arrives with a scrotal abscess that has swollen beyond imagination, causing unbearable pain. The emergency physician quickly jumpstarts the treatment, administering antibiotic therapy and extreme measures to decrease inflammation and treat the infection. The abscess is drained, relieving pressure, and the healing process finally begins. However, the challenge lies in the delicate nature of the surgery and the fact that the patient is a self-proclaimed professional wrestler. To achieve complete healing, the surgeon must meticulously balance the wrestler's activities in the ring with his recovery. The patient's impatience and tendency to push himself stand in opposition to the recommendation of the medical team, creating a delicate situation that requires the team to work together to keep the wrestler safe while also helping him recover.
