Underemployed was a comedy-drama television series that premiered on MTV in 2012. The show follows the lives of five recent college graduates, Sophia (Michelle Ang), Lou (Jared Kusnitz), Daphne (Sarah Habel), Miles (Diego Boneta), and Raviva (Inbar Lavi), as they navigate through the struggles and challenges of post-college life.

At the beginning of the series, the five friends had all graduated from college with lofty aspirations and dreams of making it big in their respective fields. However, their hopes were soon dashed when they found themselves struggling to find employment and make ends meet. They soon realized that the real world was not as glamorous as they had thought it would be.

Sophia, a writer, was a struggling artist, working as a waitress to pay the bills. Lou, an aspiring musician, was playing gigs in dive bars while Daphne, an aspiring model, was working as a nanny. Miles, who had always wanted to be a film director, was working as a production assistant on a reality TV show, and Raviva, who wanted to be a fashion designer, was interning at a fashion magazine.

The show's premise is simple yet relatable to anyone who has experienced post-college life. From navigating the awkwardness of living with parents again to the harsh realities of minimum-wage jobs, the show portrays the struggles of five millennials growing up and finding their place in the world.

Underemployed was able to capture the mood and zeitgeist of an entire generation facing economic recession and the challenges of stepping into adulthood. The show tackled issues such as unemployment, underemployment, student debt, and internships without sugarcoating them, showing how these challenges can drive young people into despair.

The characters of the show were not perfect, and that's what made them so relatable. They were flawed, sometimes selfish, sometimes clueless, but always trying to do their best. The show's humor came from the characters' attempts to navigate through their struggles, often with hilarious consequences.

At the heart of the show, though, was the relationship between the five friends. They were each other's support system, always there to pick each other up when things got tough. Even when they fought, they always managed to come back together.

Throughout the series, each of the characters faced their own personal struggles- Sophia struggled to accept her sexuality, Lou was dealing with the aftermath of cheating on his girlfriend, Daphne found herself in an abusive relationship, Miles was trying to make a name for himself in the entertainment industry, and Raviva was finding it hard to be the only one not succeeding.

One of the show's strengths was its ability to tackle difficult topics with grace and sensitivity. It tackled LGBTQ+ issues, sexism in the workplace, mental health, and sexual assault thoughtfully and realistically. The show didn't shy away from these topics, but rather confronted them head-on.

In addition to the five main characters, Underemployed also featured a talented supporting cast, including characters such as Sophia's love interest, a fellow writer named Laura (Melissa Benoist), Lou's girlfriend, Liz (Jessica Lu), and Miles' boss, Todd (Charlie Weber).

The show had a unique look and feel that set it apart from other shows. It had a vibrant color palette, with each character's storylines having a different hue. The soundtrack was also a standout, featuring artists such as Gotye, Florence and the Machine, and Foster the People.

Despite its critical acclaim and devoted fanbase, Underemployed was canceled after just one season. The series finale left fans with a cliffhanger, leaving many wondering what would happen to their favorite characters.

In conclusion, Underemployed was a smart, funny, and relatable show that captured the struggles of post-college life with honesty and heart. It wasn't afraid to tackle tough topics, and it had a talented cast that made the characters feel real and relatable. Although it was canceled after one season, it remains a cult favorite among fans who continue to re-watch and revere it.
