Betty Suarez, a young and vibrant assistant to the editor-in-chief of Mode Magazine, is struggling to fit in with her new surroundings. She comes from a humble background and doesn't blend in well with the image-obsessed employees at Mode Magazine.
In episode 19 of season 1 titled "Punch Out," Betty is on a mission to make a name for herself in the fashion industry. After being assigned to work on a story about boxing, Betty takes the opportunity to showcase her strength and determination.
Given her lack of knowledge about the sport, Betty finds herself in trouble while trying to interview the famous boxer, Oscar De La Hoya. Despite her initial hesitation, Betty soon realizes that she is not alone. Daniel Meade, her boss, joins her on the boxing trip. Daniel is dealing with his own personal issues and is looking for a way out.
Betty and Daniel meet with Oscar and try to get an interview for their story. Oscar sees through Betty’s nervous exterior and becomes impressed with her unique perspective on the sport. He agrees to give the interview and takes them backstage to meet the other boxers.
As Betty interviews the boxers, she begins to understand that they are more than just athletes. Each one has a personal story and reason for entering the sport. Betty begins to empathize with the struggles these athletes have faced and starts to see them in a new light.
Meanwhile, Daniel is trying to cope with intense emotions stemming from his personal issues. He confronts Betty about her determination to succeed and tells her to step back and accept defeat. Betty takes this advice to heart but soon realizes the struggle is not as simple as just walking away.
Back at Mode Magazine, Wilhelmina Slater is dealing with her own problems. She wants nothing more than to become the editor-in-chief of the magazine, and in order to do that, she must sabotage Daniel’s chances. She hires a photographer to take pictures of Betty and Daniel at the boxing match to make them look foolish and unprofessional.
As the episode progresses, Betty must prove herself as a strong and capable writer, while also dealing with the obstacles thrown her way. She becomes determined to show everyone at Mode Magazine that she is not just a naive assistant.
The episode ends with Betty and Daniel returning to Mode Magazine after a successful trip. Betty is proud of all that she accomplished and the progress she made, while Daniel is left to deal with his own personal demons.
