Alan gets upset when he discovers that Jake secretly furnished his apartment with help from Charlie. Meanwhile, Charlie continues to be infatuated with his newly "married" girlfriend. He's taken aback when she informs him that she's not actually married and that her reason for lying was to see if he was "husband material." Alan, attempting to get his newly found affair with Donna out of his head, goes out to buy a new pair of shoes. While at the shoe shop, he meets a knowledgeable and charming saleswoman named Rachel. Alan soon finds himself developing feelings for her and begins to think that there might be a future between them. However, his plans are thwarted when he discovers an unexpected obstacle in his quest to win Rachel over. Meanwhile, Charlie has a run-in with an ex-girlfriend at the beach, which leads to some surprising revelations about their relationship.
