Alan's girlfriend Melissa comes into town to visit and takes a liking to Charlie. Meanwhile, Jake reveals his desire to get a tattoo after seeing one on the back of Melissa's neck. Alan disapproves and tries to convince Jake to wait until he's older. However, Charlie sees the opportunity to bond with Jake over something he thinks is cool and takes him to a tattoo parlor. The owner of the parlor, Sven, is an old friend of Charlie's, and they catch up while Jake looks for a tattoo design. Melissa tags along and flirts with Charlie, causing tension between him and Alan.
As Jake is about to get his tattoo, Alan bursts into the parlor and puts a stop to it, causing a scene and embarrassing himself in front of Sven. Jake is disappointed, and Charlie is angry with Alan for ruining their bonding experience. Alan tries to make it up to Jake by taking him out for pizza, but Jake is uninterested and wants to go back to the tattoo parlor. Alan tries to convince him that tattoos are permanent and that he should wait until he's older, but Jake insists he knows what he wants.
Meanwhile, Charlie is still fuming over Melissa's advances. He confronts her and tells her to stay away from him, but she doesn't take him seriously. Later, Alan apologizes to Charlie for ruining their bonding experience and tells him that he's trying to be a good father to Jake. Charlie understands and the two make up. However, when they return to the beach house, they're surprised to find that Jake has gotten a tattoo anyway.
Jake proudly shows off his new tattoo, which reads "J.R.R. TOLLKIEN" and features a drawing of a wizard. Alan is furious, but Charlie thinks it's hilarious and takes a picture of it. Melissa leaves to go back home, and Charlie realizes that he's glad to have Alan as a brother, despite their differences.
The episode ends with the three men on the couch looking at Jake's tattoo, with Alan still fuming and Charlie unable to stop laughing. The camera zooms out to show the beach house and the sunset, emphasizing the importance of family and the bonds that tie them together.
