The show centers around John Doe, an amnesiac with no memory of his past who is looking for a fresh start. When the mysterious Calypso offers him the chance to have any wish granted if he can win the Twisted Metal tournament, John enters the fray in hopes of learning about his forgotten identity. Joining him in the madness is a crew of fellow misfits, each with their own reasons for putting their lives on the line behind the wheel.

There's Quiet, a ferocious but mute driver whose ride is a souped-up sports car equipped with deadly buzzsaws. Nox is a stoic armored trucker who seems to know more about John's past than he lets on. Then there's Skat and Glitch, psycho clowns who drive an ice cream truck that hides some sinister surprises under the hood. The competition is hosted by Calypso, an eccentric billionaire who runs Twisted Metal more for his own amusement than anything else. He provides color commentary as his unhinged contestants unleash automotive anarchy.

The arenas they battle in are just as wild and dangerous as the drivers themselves. Whether it's a dilapidated shopping mall filled with deadly traps or a crumbling metropolitan cityscape rigged to explode, the environments are designed to amp up the vehicular destruction to the extreme.
