In season 13, episode 15 of True Life, the show follows the journey of young adults who are being forced to leave their homes by their parents. In the first segment of the episode, we meet Jess, a 19-year-old who has been struggling with her mental health for years. Her parents feel that the best way for her to get the help she needs is by sending her to a therapeutic boarding school. Jess is devastated by the idea of leaving her family and friends, but she knows that she needs to focus on getting better. We see her struggle with the new routine and rules at her new school, but eventually, she starts to see progress in her mental health.
Next, we meet 21-year-old Nick who has been kicked out of his house by his parents because of his drug addiction. Nick has been a heavy user of methamphetamines and has stolen from his family to support his habit. His parents give him an ultimatum - go to rehab or leave the house. Nick chooses rehab and we see him at a residential program, where he struggles with withdrawal symptoms and the realization that he has hurt his family by his addictive behavior. Through one-on-one counseling and group therapy, Nick comes to understand the root causes of his addiction and how to prevent relapse.
Finally, we meet 22-year-old Brittney who is being sent to a year-long mission trip by her parents. Brittney has always been religious and believes that this mission trip is her calling. However, she is torn between her desire to serve others and her fear of leaving everything she knows behind. We see Brittney go through training and preparation for her trip, and we also see her say goodbye to her parents and her boyfriend. Once she arrives in Africa, Brittney struggles with homesickness and the realities of life in a different country. But as she gets to know the people she is serving, she feels a sense of purpose and fulfillment.
In all three segments of the episode, we see young adults who are being sent away by their parents for different reasons, but who all struggle with the idea of leaving their homes. We see their struggles with adapting to new environments and new people, but we also see their growth as they face challenges and learn more about themselves. Ultimately, this episode shows how resilience and determination can help anyone overcome difficult situations.
