Troopers was a sketch comedy show produced by CollegeHumor that ran from May to August 2011. Starring Sam Reich, Josh Ruben, and Luke Sholl, the show followed the misadventures of three incompetent state troopers as they bumbled their way through various situations.
The show featured a mix of live-action sketches and animated segments, with a focus on absurdist humor and exaggerated characters. The main characters were Trooper Sarah (played by Reich), Trooper Kyle (played by Ruben), and Trooper Matt (played by Sholl), each with their own distinct quirks and flaws.
Trooper Sarah was the overly enthusiastic but clueless leader of the group, prone to making impulsive decisions and getting them all into trouble. Trooper Kyle was the dim-witted but well-meaning sidekick, who often found himself the butt of the joke. Trooper Matt was the grumpy and sarcastic veteran trooper, who was constantly exasperated by the antics of his younger colleagues.
The sketches ranged from parodying classic cop dramas like Law & Order to absurd scenarios like accidentally ingesting an entire bag of mushrooms and tripping out on duty. Each sketch was a self-contained story with its own set of ridiculous characters and situations.
One particularly memorable sketch featured the troopers responding to a call about a hostage situation, only to find that the hostage was actually just a mannequin. Undeterred, Trooper Sarah decides to use the situation as a training exercise, with Trooper Kyle as the unlucky hostage. What follows is a hilariously inept attempt at a rescue mission, complete with a homemade battering ram and a poorly-timed scream.
Another standout sketch had the troopers trying to save Christmas when Santa Claus is stuck in traffic on the highway. Trooper Matt is initially reluctant to help, but Trooper Sarah and Trooper Kyle are determined to save the day. They end up commandeering a local TV news van and broadcasting a live message to Santa, urging him to use the shoulder lane to bypass the traffic. It's an absurd premise that somehow manages to be both heartwarming and hilarious.
The animated segments were equally absurd, featuring everything from a sentient car that becomes a cop for a day to a vengeful whale that wreaks havoc on the ocean. The animation style was simple but effective, with a bright and colorful aesthetic that matched the show's silly tone.
Overall, Troopers was a fun and irreverent comedy series that showcased the talents of its three main stars. The sketches were hit or miss at times, but when they hit, they were laugh-out-loud funny. The show had a short run, but it remains a cult classic among CollegeHumor fans.
