In Trinity Blood season 1 episode 21, titled "The Throne of Roses II. The Refuge," the events of the previous episode continue as Esther's rescuers make their way back to Rome. However, they soon discover that they are being followed by pursuers who seek to capture or kill Esther.
The group takes refuge in a majestic castle called Gehenna, which has a long and complex history. Inside, they meet the owner of the castle, a young girl named Ion Fortuna. Ion is kind and welcoming to the group, and she offers them shelter and protection from their pursuers.
As the group begins to settle in, they learn that Ion is the leader of a resistance movement that fights against the oppressive rule of the Methuselah nobles. The movement is made up of both humans and vampires who seek a better future for their kind.
Esther is drawn to Ion's cause and agrees to help in any way she can. She learns of a secret mission the resistance is planning and asks to be a part of it. Despite the risks, Esther is determined to do what she can to help the cause.
