Ep 2. A Wrench in the Case

In Trial & Error season 1 episode 2, titled "A Wrench in the Case," the small town of East Peck, South Carolina is still reeling from its latest scandal- the arrest and trial of beloved and renowned poetry professor, Larry Henderson (played by John Lithgow). Henderson is accused of murdering his wife and the town, particularly Henderson's oddball defense team, must come together to prove his innocence.

The episode opens with Josh Segal (played by Nicholas D'Agosto), the novice defense lawyer, and his team preparing for their first big day in court. As they discuss the case, they realize that they have garnered a lot of media attention, and not all of it is good. A news anchor, played by Sherri Shepherd, is on hand to report about the case, and she is quickly becoming a thorn in Josh's side.

As they enter the courtroom, chaos erupts as one of the jurors becomes heavily influenced by TV crime shows and wants to be the "renegade juror" who will take the case to the next level. This begins to quickly unravel Josh's case, as the juror begins spreading his own conspiracy theories to the other jurors.

Throughout the episode, the team struggles to maintain control over the case and keep Larry from being convicted of the crime. Meanwhile, a startling piece of evidence comes to light that could turn the entire case upside down. This leads the team on a wild goose chase, leading them to question some unsavory characters who may have been involved in the crime.

As the episode progresses, the team becomes increasingly frustrated, trying to navigate the quirks of the legal system, and the peculiar personalities of the townspeople. They are also challenged with managing each other, as egos and varying legal opinions threaten to derail the whole case.

Ultimately, the team is forced to adapt plan after plan, as new information continually arises. But in the end, it is up to Josh to win the case if Larry wants to restore his reputation and avoid a lifetime behind bars.
