Hundreds of years into the future, humanity is facing a bleak and uncertain future. In order to save their species, a group of highly trained operatives known as "Travelers" have been sent back in time to prevent the catastrophic events that led to their ultimate demise. In Travelers season 1 episode 2, entitled "Protocol 6," the team faces new challenges as they begin to navigate the complex web of relationships and conflicts that make up their lives in the 21st century.
As the episode begins, we see the Travelers settling into their new lives. They have taken over the identities of various people from the past in order to blend in and accomplish their mission. Their handler, the director, issues them a new protocol to follow – known as Protocol 6. This protocol states that they must not interfere with the lives of anyone they have replaced, even if it means allowing tragedy to occur. This is a difficult concept for the team to cope with, as they are inherently programmed to help people and prevent disasters.
The first test of this new protocol comes in the form of Trevor, a high school student whose body has been taken over by one of the Travelers. Trevor is a talented athlete who is being bullied by one of his teammates, causing him to feel isolated and depressed. The Traveler inhabiting Trevor's body wants to intervene and help him, but following Protocol 6 means that they must allow the situation to play out. This creates tension within the team as they grapple with the ethics of their mission.
Meanwhile, Carly – another Traveler who has taken over the life of a single mother – is struggling to balance her duties as a Traveler with her responsibilities as a parent. Her son experiences a medical emergency, and Carly is torn between getting him the help he needs and maintaining her cover as a regular person. Her teammate, Philip, comes up with a clever solution that allows them to help the boy without breaking Protocol 6.
As the episode progresses, we see the Travelers face several more challenges. One team member discovers that the person they have replaced has connections to a dangerous criminal organization, and must figure out how to navigate that world without arousing suspicion. Another member is tasked with preventing a plane crash, but finds themselves in conflict with air traffic controllers who don't believe them.
Throughout it all, the Travelers must grapple with the difficult choices they must make in order to prevent future disaster. They are haunted by the knowledge that countless lives are at stake, but are constantly reminded that they cannot save everyone. The tension between their mission and their humanity creates a compelling dramatic backdrop to the action-packed plot.
In the end, the Travelers must find a way to reconcile their desire to do good with the harsh reality of their mission. They must navigate the complex web of relationships and systems that make up the world they now inhabit, all while maintaining their cover and staying one step ahead of suspicion. Protocol 6 serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifice and dedication required to prevent a catastrophic future, and of the toll it takes on those who must execute it.
