In Trading Spaces season 10 episode 7, titled "In it to Twin It", the show continues its tradition of bringing together two sets of neighbors to swap homes and redo a room for each other with the help of a designer and carpenter. However, this episode adds an interesting twist to its usual format: the neighbors are already identical twins!
The episode begins with trading spaces between two neighboring identical twin sisters, Sara and Darra, and their husbands, Andrew and Craig, respectively. The four have been close for years, but they've never done anything like this before. Each couple has a specific room in mind that they would like to change. Sara and Andrew live in a cozy, traditional home with two different living rooms: a formal one that's almost never used and a cozy family room that needs some love. Sara and Andrew would like to swap the characterless family room for the cozy formal living room.
On the other hand, Darra and Craig's home is a large, open concept modern abode with vaulted ceilings and clean lines. They have a guest bedroom that is currently being used as a storage room and would like to turn it into a functional office. The couples reveal their ideas to each other, only to find out that they've picked completely opposite themes for their respective rooms. The tension is high as designers Laurie Smith and Frank Bielec along with carpenters Brett Tutor and Joanie Sprague show up to help.
Laurie and Frank decide to tackle Sara and Andrew's room first. Sara has requested a dark and moody space, while Andrew wants something contemporary and light. Laurie comes up with a wild idea to use a ceiling-mounted pergola to create a sense of intimacy in the room. Brett helps out by building a custom bookshelf that runs along an entire wall. The tension between Sara and Andrew grows as they struggle to come to an agreement on the design elements and color scheme.
Meanwhile, Joanie and Frank are in Darra and Craig's home working on the home office. Darra has asked for a bold, earthy color scheme while Craig prefers something more austere and classical. Joanie shocks everyone with her bold decision to paint an entire wall black to create a focal point. She builds desk spaces for both Darra and Craig and outfits the walls with greenery to give the room a touch of organic texture.
The work continues well into the night, with tensions rising between the couples. The final reveals are set up beautifully, with the couples finally seeing each other's completed rooms for the first time. The surprises keep coming, with some completely unexpected design choices appearing in both spaces. There's a lot of laughter and even some unintentional tears as everyone takes in the new rooms. The couples are delighted with the changes made and grateful for the opportunity to work so closely with their neighbors. Trading Spaces continues to be a standout hit for fans of interior design and reality TV alike.
