Detailed Episode Description:
Torchwood season 4 picks up with a bang as the team finds themselves in hot water right from the start. In "Rendition," the episode opens with Gwen Cooper (Eve Myles) and Rhys Williams (Kai Owen) attempting to hide out in rural Wales with their infant daughter, Anwen. Meanwhile, Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman), Rex Matheson (Mekhi Phifer), and Esther Drummond (Alexa Havins) are being extradited from the United States to the UK on false charges of terrorism and espionage against the British government. They are being transported along with a group of other detainees, who are all locked inside a plane that's been refitted to act as a mobile prison.
As the group makes its way over the Atlantic, things start to go awry. An explosion on board the plane leads to a chaotic crash landing in the middle of the woods, leaving the surviving passengers scattered and on the run. Jack, Rex, and Esther soon find themselves on the same team as Gwen and Rhys, as they band together to escape the clutches of the government forces who are hot on their trail. This means a lot of running, dodging gunfire, and hiding out in abandoned places as they try to stay alive and figure out what's going on.
As you might expect from an episode called "Rendition," torture plays a big role in this episode. The team comes across a secret facility where people are being interrogated using brutal methods, and it's clear that there's something very wrong going on here. But as they try to infiltrate the base and gather information, they discover that the conspiracy goes much deeper than they could have ever anticipated. There are shadowy organizations pulling the strings, powerful politicians keeping secrets, and a very disturbing plan in motion that could spell disaster for humanity.
One of the interesting dynamics in this episode is the relationship between Gwen and Jack. Jack has always been something of a mentor figure to Gwen, and here we see her stepping up and taking charge in a way that suggests she's more than capable of leading the team herself. There's a lot of tension between them as Jack grapples with his own mortality (as he always does), and it raises some interesting questions about what Torchwood would look like if Gwen took over as leader.
There's also a lot of action in this episode, as the team fights back against their pursuers and tries to stay one step ahead of danger at all times. It's not all bullets and explosions, though - there are some quieter moments that give us insight into the characters and their motivations. We see Rex struggling with the restrictions imposed on him by his newly-acquired immortality, and Esther dealing with the emotional fallout of her ordeal. Even Rhys, who is often relegated to the background, gets to show off his resourcefulness and bravery in a few key scenes.
Overall, "Rendition" is a tense, action-packed episode that sets the stage for what's to come in the rest of the season. It introduces some interesting new characters and re-introduces some familiar faces from the show's past, all while raising the stakes and promising an even bigger threat on the horizon. Whether you're a die-hard Torchwood fan or a newcomer to the series, there's plenty to enjoy in this episode.
