When strange and otherworldly events begin occurring in Cardiff, the Torchwood team is called in to investigate. The cause of these strange occurrences seems to be a mysterious little girl named Jasmine who has befriended a local man named Mark Lynch. Jasmine seems to have supernatural powers, and the team begins to learn that she is not the only spirit inhabiting the world alongside them.

As Torchwood delves deeper into the origins of Jasmine and her powers, they find themselves facing a race of fairies who are not at all like the ones in children's stories. These fairies are powerful and dangerous creatures who care little for human life. Despite their overwhelming power, the fairies are not invincible, and Torchwood must use all of their skill and technology to stand a chance against them.

Small Worlds also delves into the personal lives of the Torchwood team. As they confront the supernatural forces at work in Cardiff, they are forced to confront their own fears and weaknesses. Gwen's compassion for Mark Lynch, the man caught up in Jasmine's otherworldly grasp, is put to the test as she struggles to find a way to save his life. Meanwhile, Owen Harper must come to terms with his past and the mistakes he has made.

The episode's central theme is the idea of the small world, that at any moment, ordinary events can spiral out of control and lead to unimaginable consequences. Small Worlds presents a dark and terrifying vision of a world where supernatural forces exist just beneath the surface of everyday life.

Overall, Small Worlds is a haunting and memorable episode of Torchwood that explores both the supernatural and the human condition. With impressive visuals and a captivating storyline, it stands out as one of the strongest episodes in the show's first season.
