Tui's disappearance continues to haunt the small New Zealand town of Laketop in episode 5 of Top of the Lake. Robin, the main character, is determined to find Tui and uncover the truth behind her pregnancy, which leads her to dig deeper into the town's dark secrets.
The episode begins with Robin speaking with Bob Platt, the owner of the local drug den and brothel, who reveals that Tui was a frequent visitor. Bob's information sets Robin on a path towards the truth, but as she delves deeper into the town's underbelly, she becomes more and more isolated. Her relationship with Johnno, Tui's father, deteriorates as she gets closer to discovering what really happened to their daughter.
Meanwhile, GJ and her group of women continue to live in the wilderness outside of town. GJ announces that a new member has joined their group, a former nun named Teresa, who is searching for meaning in her life. As the women form a tighter bond, they begin to reveal their deepest secrets and desires, including GJ's own traumatic experience with sexual assault.
Back in Laketop, Robin's investigation leads her to question the town's doctor, who has been prescribing Tui birth control pills under false pretenses. The doctor reveals that she had been treating Tui for a sexually transmitted infection and pressuring her to have an abortion. This revelation sets off a chain of events that ultimately leads Robin to discover the truth about Tui's pregnancy and her kidnapper.
As the episode comes to a close, secrets are revealed and new truths come to light. Robin must face the consequences of her own actions, and the residents of Laketop are left to pick up the pieces of their fractured community.
