Watch Tokyo Project

Tokyo Project is a short film created by HBO in 2017 and directed by Richard Shepard. The film follows the story of a man named Sebastian (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) and a woman named Claire (Elisabeth Moss), who meet each other in Tokyo for a business trip. Both characters are struggling with personal issues and past traumas, which are revealed gradually through the course of the film.

The story starts with Sebastian arriving in Tokyo alone, where he is greeted by a strange driver who takes him to his hotel. In his room, he sets up a camera and starts recording himself talking to his wife and daughter back home. We learn that he is a photographer who has been hired to work on a campaign for a whiskey brand in Japan. However, he is clearly preoccupied with something else and appears to be in a state of emotional turmoil.

The next day, he meets Claire, who is also in Tokyo for business. They hit it off instantly and decide to spend the day exploring the city together. We see them visiting various tourist spots, including a shrine and a park, where they take pictures of each other. As they spend more time together, they begin to open up about their personal lives and insecurities.

Claire reveals that she is a writer who is struggling to finish her novel. She is haunted by the memory of her ex-boyfriend, who was a photographer and died in a car accident. Sebastian, on the other hand, is dealing with the guilt of cheating on his wife. He tells Claire that he feels like he's lost his way and that his camera is no longer able to capture the beauty of the world around him.

As the day comes to an end, they find themselves at a rooftop bar overlooking the city. They share a moment of intimacy, but their encounter is cut short when Sebastian receives a call from his wife. He rushes back to his hotel, leaving Claire alone in the bar. We see her staring out into the city, looking lost and alone.

The next day, Sebastian meets with his clients and begins shooting the whiskey campaign. However, he is unable to focus and starts taking pictures of random objects instead of following the brief. Meanwhile, Claire visits the place where her ex-boyfriend died and leaves a message for him on a piece of paper.

In the final scenes of the film, Sebastian and Claire meet up one last time before their flights home. They exchange gifts and say goodbye, but not before Sebastian confesses his infidelity to Claire. She tells him that she knows what it's like to be haunted by a past love and that he needs to find a way to forgive himself. The film ends with both characters boarding their planes, looking out into the sky, and reflecting on their time in Tokyo.

Overall, Tokyo Project is a beautifully shot and poignant film that explores themes of love, loss, and redemption. The story is told through a series of intimate moments between two flawed characters, who find solace in each other's company. While the film is short, it is able to pack a powerful emotional punch and leave a lasting impression on the viewer.
