In the season 5 episode 48 of Tiny House Nation, titled 560 Sq. Ft. Taking Tiny Roots, John and Zack are called to help a couple, Tim and Shannon, who are looking to build a tiny house on their family's land in Virginia. The couple had always dreamed of building a home on the land where they got married and started their family, and they want to live simply and sustainably in a tiny house.
John and Zack are excited to help Tim and Shannon design and build their dream tiny home, but immediately run into a major obstacle: the land is steep and hilly, making it difficult to find a level spot for the tiny house. After some brainstorming, they come up with a plan to build a foundation from 12 concrete piers that will provide a stable platform for the house.
The house itself is a 560 square foot structure that incorporates natural materials and sustainable features like a metal roof, board-and-batten cedar siding, and a composting toilet. Inside, the house features a warm and welcoming living room with a wood-burning stove, a small dining area, and a compact kitchen with a full-sized oven and stovetop.
One of the most unique aspects of this tiny house is the sleeping loft, which is accessed by a custom-built ladder made of tree branches. The loft features a king-sized bed and a skylight that provides a view of the stars at night. The couple's two young daughters also have their own loft space, complete with a whimsical treehouse feel and hidden storage nooks.
Despite the challenges of building on the hilly terrain, John and Zack are able to successfully complete the house and turn it over to Tim and Shannon. The couple is thrilled with their new tiny home, which allows them to live close to nature and in a way that aligns with their values of simplicity and sustainability.
