In the 325 Sq. Ft. Expandable Tiny Cottage, the team from Tiny House Nation are challenged with designing a tiny home that can potentially expand to offer more space. The clients, a family of four, want a space that can grow with them and their changing needs.
The first step in the design process is to create a base structure that meets the family's immediate needs. The team decides to use a combination of traditional building techniques and pre-fabricated components to create a strong, stable and functional tiny home. The main living area is outfitted with a comfortable sofa bed and a fold-down dining table to maximize space. A small but functional kitchen area is also installed, complete with a gas stove, full-sized refrigerator, and sink.
The team also integrates a clever storage solution by creating a built-in shelving system that doubles as a staircase to the home's lofted sleeping areas. The children's loft features a bunk bed, while the parents' loft includes a queen-sized bed and additional storage space.
The real challenge in this build, however, lies in the home's expandability. The family wants the option to add more space as they need it in the future. To accommodate this, the team installs a unique pop-up roof system that allows for an additional 100 square feet of living space to be added. When expanded, the roof creates a spacious second floor with enough room for a second bathroom and a master suite.
To ensure that the home is functional and comfortable even when expanded, the team installs a sophisticated HVAC system that can handle the additional square footage. They also install a custom-built staircase that leads up to the second floor and incorporates additional storage space.
Throughout the project, the team faces a number of challenges, including unexpected construction issues and tight deadlines. However, with their combined skills and expertise, they manage to successfully complete the tiny home on time and within budget.
Overall, 325 Sq. Ft. Expandable Tiny Cottage is an inspiring example of the ingenuity and creativity that goes into creating a functional and comfortable tiny home. With its unique pop-up roof system and thoughtful design features, it is a space that is not only well-suited to the family's current needs but also has the ability to grow and change with them over time.
