Tinga Tinga Tales is an animated children's show about African folklore and animals. In season 1 episode 15, titled "Why Warthog is So Ugly," the audience is introduced to Warthog and learns about how he came to have his unique appearance.
The episode begins with a group of animals gathered around Warthog, teasing him about his looks. Warthog is upset and wants to know why he is so ugly. The other animals tell him it's because of his long, sharp tusks or his warty skin. Warthog is not satisfied with these answers and sets out to find the real reason.
As Warthog searches for the answer, he encounters various animals who claim they can make him beautiful. Elephant suggests he use mud to smooth out his skin while peacock suggests he use feathers to make himself look more attractive. Warthog tries these ideas, but they only make him look more ridiculous.
Eventually, Warthog comes across the wise old Turtle who tells him the real reason for his appearance. She explains that during a great fire that swept through the savannah, all the animals ran for their lives except for Warthog. Warthog stayed behind to gather the roots and vegetables that he lives off of and gave them to the other animals. But in doing so, Warthog's entire body got burned which caused his skin and hair to change, and that is why he looks the way he looks today.
Warthog is happy to finally have an answer to his question and even happier to learn that his unique appearance is a result of his bravery and altruism, which earns him respect from the other animals.
The episode ends with Warthog joining the other animals at a watering hole feeling proud of who he is and how he looks. The message of the episode is that true beauty comes from within, and appearances are just a small part of who we are as individuals.
