Jack, Janet, and Terri return home from an evening out to find their apartment has been robbed. In the process, their pet bird escaped and the three are left to search for it while lamenting the loss of their possessions. Meanwhile, the landlord, Mr. Furley, reveals to Jack that he will be taking a leave of absence to take care of his brother’s children. Jack, mistakenly believing that Mr. Furley is expecting a child, spreads the news to everyone in the building.
Later on, Cindy, one of Jack's old girlfriends, comes to visit him. She reveals to him that she is pregnant and the father is a married man who is unwilling to leave his wife. Jack, being the gentleman he is, offers to help her out by taking her to Lamaze classes and being there for her throughout the pregnancy. However, Jack soon has trouble balancing his time between supporting Cindy and helping his roommates find their lost bird.
As the episode progresses, Janet and Terri come to realize that their possessions may not have been all that valuable after all. They become more concerned about finding their bird, whom they come to realize is a member of their family. Amidst the search for the bird and Jack's increasing involvement with Cindy, the roommates come to understand the meaning of family. They realize that family isn't just about blood ties, but also about being there for one another when they need it most.
