In the season 6 episode 18 of the Three Stooges Collection, titled "Slaphappy Sleuths," the trio finds themselves entangled in a mystery as private detectives. The episode opens with the Stooges getting fired from their previous job as gas station attendants, leading them to post a notice advertising their services as private investigators.
Their first client is a young woman named Mary who hires them to track down her missing boyfriend, a scientist named Dr. Danforth. The trio sets out to investigate and soon find themselves in the middle of a dangerous scheme involving a mysterious formula and a group of shady characters.
The Stooges disguise themselves as delivery men to gain access to the laboratory where Dr. Danforth works, but their clumsy antics soon draw the attention of the suspicious lab owner, Mr. Bradley. The Stooges barely manage to escape, but not before gaining a valuable clue that suggests Dr. Danforth may have been kidnapped.
The Stooges follow the clues, which lead them to a rundown house on the outskirts of town. Inside, they encounter a group of thugs, including Mr. Bradley, who have kidnapped Dr. Danforth in an attempt to steal the formula he had been working on.
The Stooges engage in a series of slapstick battles with the criminals, using everything from pies to fire extinguishers to defeat them. In the end, they manage to rescue Dr. Danforth and retrieve the stolen formula, delivering it to the authorities.
But despite their success, the Stooges find that they are still out of work as private detectives. It seems that their methods are a bit too unorthodox for most clients. The episode ends with the trio walking off into the distance, still hoping to find their true calling.
Overall, "Slaphappy Sleuths" is a classic Three Stooges episode, filled with plenty of physical comedy and silly gags. Fans of the trio will enjoy watching them try their hand at detective work, even if they don't quite succeed.
