Thomas and Friends season 1 episode 10, titled "Salty's Secret," follows the adventures of the steam engines and their friend Salty, a friendly diesel engine with a big secret.
The episode begins with the engines going about their usual work at Tidmouth Sheds. Thomas is tasked with collecting a delivery of fish from the docks, but he doesn't like the smell of them and wishes he had a more exciting job instead. Percy offers to swap duties with him, giving Thomas the chance to transport trucks of coal instead.
While Thomas is enjoying his new job, Percy heads to the docks and meets Salty, who has just arrived from a far-off land called Sodor. Salty is a talkative engine who loves to regale Percy with stories about his adventures, but he also warns him that the sea can be a dangerous place.
As they chat, Percy notices that Salty is hiding something behind his shed. Salty admits that it's a secret, and says that he can't tell Percy what it is. Percy becomes curious and tries to guess what the secret might be, but all Salty will say is that it has something to do with the sea.
Meanwhile, Thomas has finished his job and returns to Tidmouth Sheds, where he tells the other engines about his adventures with the coal trucks. Salty overhears their conversation and shares his own story of how he once helped pull a ship out of the water when it got stuck on the rocks. The other engines are impressed, but they also wonder why Salty loves the sea so much if it can be so dangerous.
Later that evening, Percy can't resist his curiosity any longer and sneaks behind Salty's shed to try and uncover his secret. Just as he gets close, however, he is startled by a noise and accidentally knocks over a crate. Inside the crate, he sees a wooden model of a pirate ship.
Percy is confused and doesn't know what to make of the discovery, but he decides to keep it to himself and not tell the other engines. The next day, Salty is excited to share his stories about Sodor with Percy again, but Percy can't help feel guilty about keeping the secret.
As the day goes on, Percy becomes more and more preoccupied with thoughts of the wooden ship. He imagines that Salty might be a pirate, or that the ship might be cursed. When he finally confesses to Thomas and the other engines about what he's found, they all laugh and tell him that the ship is just a toy and that Salty was probably planning to give it to one of the children on Sodor.
Percy is relieved to hear this, and he apologizes to Salty for snooping around behind his shed. Salty forgives him and tells him that he's glad they can be friends. The episode ends with the engines all agreeing that Salty has some of the best stories, and that they're lucky to have him as a friend.
Overall, "Salty's Secret" is a charming episode that reinforces the importance of honesty, friendship, and not jumping to conclusions. The show's colorful animation, catchy theme song, and lovable characters are sure to entertain both young and old viewers alike.
