Percy, a small green engine, is feeling overworked and underappreciated at the station. He sees all of the other engines with their special jobs and feels like he's just a regular old engine with nothing special about him. One day, he decides that he's had enough and announces to his fellow engines that he's running away.
The other engines, including his best friend Thomas, try to convince him to stay, but Percy won't listen. He chugs away from the station and onto the main tracks, determined to leave his old life behind and find something better. Along the way, he meets up with some troublesome trucks who try to derail him, but he manages to escape.
Meanwhile, Henry, a large green engine, is having his own problems. He needs a special kind of coal to keep his steam engine running, but the coal they've been giving him is making him feel sick and sluggish. He's afraid to speak up and tell the station managers that he needs something different, but eventually decides that he has no other choice.
Together, Percy and Henry learn that it's important to speak up for themselves and make sure that they're taken care of. They come up with a plan to get the coal that Henry needs and help Percy feel more appreciated at the station. In the end, they both feel happier and more fulfilled in their roles as engines, and Percy decides to stay at the station after all.
