Hosted by foodie and travel enthusiast Andrew Zimmern, The Zimmern List is a culinary adventure series that explores the best food and drink destinations across the country. On the show's second season, Andrew takes viewers on a journey through some of America's most vibrant culinary scenes, featuring some hidden gems and discovering some of the most delicious dishes around.
In the third episode of season 2, Andrew travels to Reno, Nevada, to experience the city's diverse and exciting food scene. From classic Basque cuisine to modern sushi, Reno has plenty of delicious surprises in store for the adventurous palate.
First on Andrew's itinerary is a stop at the iconic Louis' Basque Corner, a beloved Reno institution that has been serving up traditional Basque meals for over half a century. Andrew talks to Louis' owner about the history of Basque cuisine and the importance of family in the Basque culture. He then digs into a hearty meal of lamb chops, sweetbreads, and a spicy Basque sausage called chorizo.
Next up, Andrew heads to a sushi restaurant called Ichiban, where he meets the owner and sushi chef, Kenny. Kenny has been making sushi for over thirty years and brings a unique and creative approach to traditional Japanese fare. Andrew samples a variety of sushi rolls, including the El Rollo, a Nevada-inspired roll packed with shrimp tempura, avocado, and spicy tuna.
Continuing his exploration of Reno's diverse culinary scene, Andrew visits the Depot Craft Brewery Distillery, where he learns about the process of brewing and distilling and gets a taste of some of the brewery's handcrafted beers and cocktails. Along with the classic Depot Burger, Andrew indulges in some fried mac and cheese bites and flavorful wings with a twist.
After a long day of eating and drinking, Andrew concludes his Reno adventure with a visit to the cozy and intimate Via Brasil Steakhouse. The restaurant specializes in Brazilian-style churrasco, a skewered meat barbecue that is served tableside. Andrew tries a variety of meats, including picanha steak and spicy sausage, along with traditional side dishes like yucca flour and black beans.
