Mulder and Scully investigate a mysterious case where an employee in a high-rise office building claims that his boss is a monster who is controlling the minds of his co-workers. The man, Greg, believes that he is the only one who can see through the facade, and grows increasingly erratic as he tries to convince his colleagues of the truth. Despite his best efforts, he is eventually put on administrative leave and sent to a psychiatric hospital.
Scully initially attempts to dismiss Greg's claims as delusions, but Mulder is intrigued by the possibility of a real-life "monster" and takes a closer look at the case. As they delve deeper, they uncover a web of strange occurrences and bizarre behavior, including the presence of a strange substance on the boss's computer equipment that seems to have transformed his employees into obedient, zombie-like drones.
Determined to get to the bottom of the case, Mulder and Scully go undercover at the company and soon find themselves at odds with the boss, whose powers seem to extend beyond the office walls. As they race to save Greg and the rest of his co-workers from a life of mindless servitude, they begin to suspect that the monster they're looking for may be closer than they initially thought.
