In "Firewalker," the ninth episode of The X-Files' second season, Mulder and Scully find themselves investigating a team of scientists who are searching for a deadly organism in a volcanic area. The episode's cold open depicts an excruciating death of a scientist who was looking for the organism. She is shown writhing on the floor, the ominous music adding to the tension. When Mulder and Scully are called in to investigate, they find that another member of the team has disappeared. The search for him leads them to an underground cave system, and the investigators soon find themselves in a desperate fight for survival.
The episode begins with Mulder and Scully being summoned to Mount Avalon, Washington by a group of scientists they had worked with before. The scientists are working to explore a volcanic area and to find a deadly organism. Several of the scientists had witnessed a colleague’s harrowing death at the hands of the organism, which motivated their call for aid. With Mulder and Scully’s help, they hope to identify the organism, which they believe is responsible for several unexplained deaths in the region.
Once at the site, Mulder and Scully are introduced to Dr. Daniel Trepkos, the leader of the team of scientists. The team has created a system of walkie-talkies and helmets rigged with cameras to communicate between the surface and the underground. All seems to be going well until one of the scientists goes missing. Mulder and Scully begin a search and soon find the missing scientist’s body. It is clear that the organism has taken another life.
As Mulder and Scully dig deeper, they discover that the organism is highly intelligent and that it has been hiding in the shadows, waiting to infect the rest of the team. Mulder is unfazed by the imminent danger and is determined to expose the truth. Meanwhile, Scully struggles to keep the remaining team members safe.
The tension builds as the investigators go deeper underground. With every turn they take, they become more engulfed in danger. The organism begins to reveal itself more freely as the team's vulnerability increases. As it becomes increasingly clear that the organism is now targeting them, Mulder and Scully must act fast to find a way to stop it.
The episode's standout moment comes when one of the scientists, Dr. Davey, is overtaken by the organism. While in the grips of the savage creature, Dr. Davey sets a fire around the cave, endangering the entire team. Scully’s strength and quick thinking save the rest of the team, but Dr. Davey’s life is lost in the chaos.
As the episode draws to a close, Mulder and Scully surface from the underground cave, exhausted but alive. The team is shaken but grateful to have made it out. The episode ends with the team's lead scientist, Dr. Treppkos, revealing a box of rocks that appears to have been the cause of the organism, thanking Mulder and Scully for their assistance.
