Mulder and Scully investigate a nursing home after a nurse reports being sexually assaulted by an unseen presence. The nursing home, named Excelsis Dei, is where residents go to live out their days, but it's not long before Mulder begins to suspect that something sinister is going on. The residents seem to be complaining of being attacked and molested by someone, but the incidents are always elusive, leaving no visible marks or evidence of what has occurred.
While interviewing the residents, Mulder and Scully come across a woman named Mrs. McRoberts, who claims that she was sexually assaulted in her room by a former resident, who has since passed away. However, Mulder discovers that the former resident was not actually a male, as everyone had believed, but rather a female nurse who had been fired for mistreating patients.
As they dig deeper, Mulder and Scully discover that there are other factors at play, including the use of psychotropic drugs and vengeful spirits. However, Mulder's theories become even more outrageous when he suggests that the ghosts of past residents are attacking the living, seeking revenge for past wrongs.
The episode features a number of long-standing X-Files themes, including the blurring of reality and the supernatural, and a storyline that plays with the viewer's perception of what is happening on the screen. There are tense and creepy moments throughout as Mulder and Scully try to uncover the truth about what is happening at Excelsis Dei, and it's certainly a standout episode in the second season.
The overall tone of the episode is eerie and unsettling, and it plays with the idea of what is real and what is not. Throughout the course of the investigation, Mulder and Scully find themselves constantly questioning their own perceptions of events, as people and objects seem to appear and disappear before their very eyes. It's a classic X-Files episode that provides plenty of thrills and suspense.
