The World From Above, season 11 episode 11 takes us flying over the eastern state of Massachusetts in the United States of America. Starting in the historic town of Lexington, our camera takes in the beautiful blend of colonial architecture and luscious greenery. Hoping to gain independence from Britain, the first official battle between American colonists and British troops took place in Lexington in 1775.
As we soar over the quaint New England towns of Littleton and Groton, we catch glimpses of farms, forests, and lakes in the distance. These towns offer a perfect example of rural American life, where the clock seems to tick at a slower pace. Hitting the city of Worcester, we get a glimpse of the downtown area with towering buildings, riverfronts, and shops. A bustling metropolis with a rich culture and history, Worcester is also home to world-renowned universities such as Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Clark University.
Further west, we pass over the Quabbin Reservoir, which provides drinking water to roughly 2.5 million Massachusetts residents. With a total capacity of over 412 billion gallons, the reservoir is one of the largest man-made public water supplies in the United States. Our journey then takes us over Amherst, home to the University of Massachusetts Amherst, one of the largest public universities in the state.
Moving towards Springfield, we get a bird's eye view of the surrounding mountains and forests; a stark contrast from the urban landscape of Worcester. Springfield, located on the banks of the Connecticut River, is the largest city in western Massachusetts. With a thriving arts community and notable museums such as the Springfield Museums, the city is also home to the famous Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden.
As we glide over the city, we get a glimpse of its iconic landmarks, such as the MassMutual Center and the Basketball Hall of Fame. The latter is dedicated to preserving and honoring the history of basketball. Springfield's renowned history also includes being the birthplace of the hugely popular sport. The hall of fame recognizes the world's greatest players, coaches, referees, and great teams and includes interactive exhibits for people of all ages.
Our journey ends in Springfield, wondering about the richness that this historic state holds, Massachusetts, the landing site of the first pilgrims, state of the industrial revolution, home to one of the world's best universities, and the birthplace of basketball.
