John Boy and Jim Bob decide to have a contest on who can hit the most home runs. Meanwhile, Olivia is struggling with finding the perfect Christmas gift for John, while also trying to hide the fact that they can barely afford anything.
As the family prepares for Christmas, Olivia takes John Boy and Mary Ellen to Charlottesville to buy presents, where they stumble upon an old church putting on a Christmas play. Mary Ellen is chosen to play the role of Mary in the nativity scene, but Olivia is determined to get John Boy the lead role of the Star.
Back at home, John and Grandma are worried about how they will afford Christmas, with John even considering selling the family cow to earn some extra money. But when John Boy shares the news that he got the lead role in the Christmas play, Olivia sees an opportunity to make some money by charging admission for the family's friends and neighbors to see John Boy perform.
As the night of the play arrives, the family works feverishly to get everything set up, making sure everything is perfect for their guests. John Boy does an incredible job as the Star, while Mary Ellen's performance as Mary brings tears to the audience's eyes.
After the play, the family is overjoyed at the success of the event, with Olivia grateful for the money they earned, and John touched by the fact that his family was able to come together to make Christmas special for everyone. As they all gather around the tree to exchange gifts, the true meaning of Christmas is felt by all, and the family is reminded of how blessed they truly are, even in the midst of financial struggle.
