In season 4 episode 4 of The Walking Dead titled "Indifference", the group sets out to look for medicine in a nearby college campus. Carol and Rick lead the way and immediately begin to butt heads over their different mindsets. Carol has become more ruthless, believing that sacrificing a few to protect the many is necessary in this new world. Rick, on the other hand, still holds onto his old moral compass and struggles with the burden of leadership. As they scavenge the campus, they encounter a few walkers and come across two people who appear to have died from a deadly flu virus that is spreading throughout the area. Carol is quick to suggest that they should leave the two individuals behind and focus on getting the medication, but Rick is hesitant to abandon anyone.
Meanwhile, Michonne, Tyreese, Daryl, and Bob head out on their own mission to find more medication at a local veterinary college. Michonne confides in Daryl about her past and they bond over their mutual losses. During their search, they come across a group of walkers trapped in a pit. Tyreese, still reeling from the loss of his girlfriend, Karen, shows a moment of recklessness when he jumps into the pit to take out the walkers. However, he is ultimately saved by the quick thinking of his companions.
Back at the college campus, Rick and Carol continue to have differing opinions on how to handle the two sick individuals they encountered earlier. Carol tries to convince Rick to see things her way, but he remains steadfast in his belief that they need to help everyone they can. Their argument escalates and Rick ultimately decides to leave Carol behind. She is left to fend for herself and finds her way back to the prison on her own.
The episode tackles themes of morality, sacrifice, and the harsh realities of survival in a post-apocalyptic world. As the characters face more difficult decisions and challenges, they are forced to confront their own beliefs and values. "Indifference" sets up future conflicts and developments within the group, leaving viewers curious about what will come next.
