Hitomi's ability to see visions of the future once again comes into play in this episode, entitled "Memories of a Feather." With their knowledge of the Zaibach forces expanding, Van and the others are forced to seriously evaluate their situation and potential courses of action. Hitomi is particularly shaken by a vision she has, and believes that the group must seek out the Mystic Moon's people for assistance.

However, Hitomi is still reeling from the knowledge that Van's Zaibach heritage has been kept from her. Meanwhile, Allen is keeping a close eye on Hitomi, and he's not the only one. Zaibach's crazy physician Folken has spotted Hitomi's pink feather pendant - which was left behind by Van in the last episode - and realizes what it is. Complications arise when Princess Millerna has designs on Allen, but Allen is still pining after Hitomi, much to Millerna's chagrin. Millerna is not the only one with romantic interests, as a plot involving the feisty catgirl Merle heats up with both Van and Allen vying for her affections.

As Zagato's mysterious history is revealed and the true power of Escaflowne is uncovered, the conflicts between our various parties - the inhabitants of Gaea, Folken's Zaibach, and the Mystic Moon folk - start to reach a fever pitch. Hitomi's visions are becoming more and more frequent, and an encounter with an old mechanical bird ties back into the series' larger mythology. Will the heroes be able to weather the storm and strike back at their enemies?

"Memories of a Feather" is a crucial episode in the ongoing narrative of The Vision of Escaflowne, increasing tensions and fleshing out our heroes and villains alike. Hitomi is at the center of much of the drama, grappling with both her prophetic abilities and her conflicting emotions for Van and Allen, while also trying to keep one step ahead of Zaibach's various schemes. The romantic plots also ratchet up, with Millerna emerging as a surprisingly interesting character and Merle continuing to be both a source of humor and a potential liability for the rest of the cast.

At the same time, the episode does not forget its action-packed roots. Mecha battles continue to be a key point of Escaflowne's appeal, and the various engagements in "Memories of a Feather" are thrilling and well-staged. The use of danger and stakes is also noteworthy, with both the heroes and villains experiencing serious setbacks that up the tension levels considerably. In particular, the scene where Folken uses his psychic abilities to immobilize several of the heroes is both creepy and effective.

Overall, "Memories of a Feather" is a standout installment in The Vision of Escaflowne's first season. It advances the plot in meaningful ways, introduces new complications and characters, and delivers both emotional and action-packed moments. Fans of the show will not want to miss it, and those looking for a strong anime series with engaging characters and a rich world-building will find plenty to enjoy here.
