Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji are summoned to attend a night-hunt at the eerie Ghostwater Creek. Before they can depart, they are stopped by a group of Lanling Jin disciples led by Jin Guangshan's younger brother, Jin Zixuan. Jin Zixuan requests that they assist his father, Jin Guangshan, who is experiencing an unexplained condition that has caused his physical strength to deteriorate rapidly.
Despite Lan Wangji's reluctance, Wei Wuxian agrees to help out, and they follow Jin Zixuan to Jin Guangshan's estate. However, upon their arrival, they find that the situation is far more complicated than they had anticipated. Jin Guangshan is not only suffering from a mysterious illness, but he is also paranoid and obsessed with his own mortality. He becomes enraged upon seeing Wei Wuxian, whom he blames for the downfall of his sister's family.
The group is soon interrupted by the arrival of a group of fierce corpse demons that are terrorizing the estate. Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji engage in a battle with the demons, but their efforts prove to be fruitless as more and more demons arrive. Despite their initial shock, Jin Zixuan quickly takes charge, and he orders his men to form a formation that repels the demons.
As the battle rages on, Wei Wuxian realizes that the demons are being controlled by someone. He sets out to investigate and is surprised to find that the culprit is none other than Jin Guangshan's trusted physician, Wen Ning.
Wei Wuxian confronts Wen Ning, who reveals that he was forced to summon the demons by the Wen clan as a way of retaliating against Jin Guangshan for his mistreatment of their people in the past. Wen Ning explains that he has been blackmailed into cooperating with the Wen clan and has to summon the demons on a regular basis.
Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji work together to subdue Wen Ning and put an end to the demon-summoning ritual. However, before they can leave, Jin Guangshan confronts Wei Wuxian once more, determined to exact his revenge for his sister's family.
The two engage in a fierce battle, but Wei Wuxian ultimately prevails. He inflicts a wound on Jin Guangshan, but before he can finish him off, he is stopped by Lan Wangji. In the end, Jin Guangshan is taken into custody, and Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji return to the Cloud Recesses.
